Let us grow some lettuce!
Now that all the construction is done, it’s time to get some lettuce started. This setup uses a rockwool growing cube similar to the dutch bucket system, only these are a little smaller, probably 1 inch square. They fit into the squares that are cut out on the Growing channel covers.
The growing cubes are placed in a plastic tray with holes to allow water to flow thru then soaked with ph adjusted water and then a seed or seeds are placed in the holes on the top side, and then the tray is placed in the nursery tray on the NFT table.
The nursery area has water flowing thru it constantly, this keeps a fresh supply of nutrients going to the seedlings until they make the final destination in the growing channels.
After a day or two in the nursery area the seeds sprout and in about a week they are ready to put in the growing channels.
Once the seedlings are old enough they are transferred to the growing channels for the final grow out. The grow cubes are broken or cut apart and each plant gets a hole in the channel cover, then the fertilizer solution is turned on to flow down the channel, the plants roots will grow down into the solution and pick up all the nutrients it need.
The seedlings grow very fast and we plant a new set every week, that way we will harvest a set one week and then replant into those channels, the next week another set is ready to harvest and replant and so on, hopefully this will allow for a weekly harvest.
So there it is, we have about one more week before we harvest the first set , I will keep you updated!
